Stanislaw Wyspianski’s influential 1901 play details a marriage ceremony between a poet and peasant. The wedding party is attended by a cross-section of society. However, the veneer of harmony is broken when ghosts – drawn from local history and legend – appear to the revellers. Wajda’s adaptation employs dizzying cinematography and creates an eerie atmosphere as he presents a searing critique of the nation. It became one of the most culturally significant works of polish cinema.

Screenings of Andrzej Wajda’s films in the USA in 2026 are part of the ‘Wajda 100 Tour – North America’ project, organized by DI Factory with the financial support of the Polish Film Institute.
