BIO: John Waters is a legendary filmmaker who redefined cult cinema with his outrageous and subversive films. His 1972 masterpiece Pink Flamingos made him a cult icon and was added to the National Film Registry for its cultural significance.
Waters went on to direct a string of notorious hits, including Female Trouble, Desperate Living, and Polyester—which featured the infamous “Odorama” scratch ‘n’ sniff cards. In 1988, Hairspray became a mainstream success and was also inducted into the National Film Registry.
He followed it with Hollywood-backed films like Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, Pecker, and Cecil B. DeMented, all infused with his signature filth and wit. In 2023, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures honored him with a career retrospective exhibition, Pope of Trash, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
