2025 Season
Gershwin Centennial Concert
January 26, 2025; 4:00 PM
Produced in association with the Gershwin Institute of the University of Michigan. Because of last year’s hit Gershwin Centennial Concert at the Michigan Theater, we are proud to present another Centennial celebration of George Gershwin’s music. This year the Institute will feature the Concerto in F for solo piano and orchestra, performed by pianist Tzu-Yin Huang. Written a century ago, in 1925, this piece was commissioned by the legendary conductor and director Walter Damrosch. Having performed Rhapsody in Blue during its centennial celebration, the orchestral ensemble received rousing standing ovations at last year’s Centennial Concert. This concert will also include a selection of musical theater songs and orchestral performances by the talented faculty and students of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance. Michael Owen, Ira Gershwin's biographer, will offer some reflections on the legendary lyricist and will be signing books afterward.
